Ingredients

  • 8 slices Cracker Barrel Old Cheddar Cheese Slices
  • 1 1/2 lb (750 g) ground beef
  • 4 slices bacon, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup (60 mL) bread crumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp (15 mL) Worcestershire sauce
  • 4 tsp (20 mL) steak spice
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup (60 mL) barbecue sauce
  • 4 burger buns, split
  • 1/4 cup (60 mL) mayonnaise
  • 4 tsp (20 mL) ketchup
  • 4 tsp (20 mL) Dijon mustard
  • 1 gherkin, finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/4 tsp (1 mL) smoked paprika
  • 4 leaves of lettuce
  • 1 ripe avocado, halved, pitted and sliced
  • 4 thick slices tomato
  • 4 slices onion rounds
  • 16 slices bread-and-butter pickles

Directions

  1. Mix together ground beef, bacon, bread crumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, steak spice and garlic. Divide into 8 portions and shape into 1/2-inch (1 cm) thick patties. Sandwich cheese slice between 2 patties and pinch to enclose cheese and seal edges.
  2. Preheat grill to medium-high; grease grate well. Grill burgers for 8 to 10 minutes or until meat is cooked through and internal temperature on instant-read thermometer reaches 160°F (71°C). Brush with barbecue sauce; top with cheese slice. Grill for 1 to 2 minutes or until cheese melts. Meanwhile, grill buns for about 1 minute or until lightly toasted.
  3. Stir together mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, chopped gherkins, garlic and smoked paprika; spread over buns. Assemble burgers in buns with lettuce, avocado, tomato, onion and pickles.

Helpful Hint

For a bacon lover’s burger, top each burger with a slice of bacon.
